5 Ways to Cut Your Air Conditioning Costs!

It’s MONEY MONDAY with Savings Gal! Temperatures are rising as summer approaches, but that doesn’t mean that your air conditioning bill has to. There are several ways to keep cool this summer without “sweating” over that energy bill!

Since the US Department of Energy reports that over half of a household’s energy usage goes towards heating and cooling, it’s important to take a look at saving money in these areas anyway. Here is a list of 5 ways to cut your air conditioning costs during those warm spring and summer months.

  1. Set That Thermostat!
Set your air conditioning thermostat as high as possible without making you too uncomfortable. When you are gone during the day for work or other activities, set your thermostat higher than normal. If you have a programable thermostat, this is very easy to do because you can set it for different temperatures for different times during the day and even for different times each day of the week. According to Geoff Goodwin (the division vice president of Emerson, the country’s largest provider of heating and cooling systems) programmable thermostats can save consumers up to 30 percent on their household energy costs (about $250-$300 per year).
*If you have a programable thermostat and aren’t sure how to operate it, check out the Energy Star Website for their video on Thermostat Operating Instructions.

  2. Close Those Blinds and Drapes!
During the day when the sun is out, close those blinds and drapes. Anything that keeps the sun out of your house will help your air conditioning unit maintain a cooler temperature inside your house. The less you use your air conditioner, the less greenhouse effect you have on this earth and the less you contribute to global warming.
  3. Turn on Those Fans!
Turning on a ceiling fan or other circulating fans in the room you are in will cool you down using the wind chill factor. According to the US Department of Energy, if your air conditioner is on, a ceiling fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort.
*Remember to turn your fans off when you leave a room because fans cool people, not rooms.
  4. Keep That Oven Off!
On really hot days, try to avoid using your oven. The oven heats up your house even more and causes your air conditioner to kick on more frequently. Instead use the stove, microwave, an outdoor grill, or a slow cooker to cook your meals.
*Slow cookers are energy-sippers compared to most other cooking methods like a traditional oven, stove-top, or toaster oven. Slow cookers use just 100 watts of electricity, which means that if you use it once a week for eight hours at a time, it’ll only cost you about TWENTY CENTS a month in electricity! Now that’s FRUGALICIOUS!
  5. Clean Those Filters!
Cleaning your air conditioner filter can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by as much as 15%. Clogged and dirty air filters block the normal air flow to your air conditioner, which causes the air conditioner to work harder.
*If you need help locating your air conditioner unit filter, check out the US Department of Energy’s Air Conditioner Filters Maintenance article.
*There are other things you can do to keep your home cool during those hot summer months like opening your windows at night when it’s cool outside and closing them in the morning before it gets warm so you trap the cool air inside your house, get your AC serviced, etc. Just make sure you do some, if not all of them so you are not throwing money away each month and sweating that bill.

Did you know that there are 4 ways to save extra money on Amazon Diaper Deals? Honestly if you are in need of diapers and if you combine all four of these saving strategies you will score some amazingly FRUGALICIOUS diaper deals!

Here is how to maximize your diaper savings on Amazon:

1. Sign-up for a FREE Amazon Mom account! Anyone can sign-up, not just moms! You will get 15% off select diapers and FREE 2-Day shipping on all your orders. Plus after your first order of diapers you will receive a $10 off coupon in the mail to use on a future order of diapers.

2. Order your diapers using the “Subscribe & Save” option to the right of your screen. You will save a total of 30% off (15% for having an Amazon Mom account and 15% for choosing the subscribe & save option).

3. Use an Amazon 20% off or $10 off baby store coupon. Just enter your “Promotional Claim Code” in the box during checkout. See my Q&A section below on where to find these coupons.

4. Use Amazon Diaper Coupons from their website. There aren’t always coupons, but when there are you can save BIG! Be sure to refresh your browser a few times to see all the coupons available. Clicking on the coupon will automatically add it to your account and take you to a list of products that the coupon can be used on. Those products may or may not be the best prices, you can always check, but make sure you compare them with my list of the best Amazon Diaper Deals or check out the Amazon Subscribe & Save Page in Diaper Care.

YES, all 4 of these savings can be combined into one single transaction! Can you believe that?! It’s totally, honestly, really TRUE!

It’s Q&A time! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding diaper savings on Amazon:

Q: Where do I get Amazon 20% off or $10 off Diaper Coupons?
A: Believe it or not you can actually get these coupons for free in many places! Here is a list of places that have Amazon diaper or baby store coupons:

Q: Can Amazon Baby Care Promotional Codes be stacked?
A: I wanna say, yes sometimes! I say this because there is always an exception to the rule and sometimes rules change. I have heard that YJ codes are stacking with coupon codes that begin with YT!  And I have also heard that on top of those two codes stacking they also stack with the $10 codes that are out there. Hey, my philosophy is it can’t hurt to try! The worst that could happen is they get rejected in your checkout process, right? Give it a try!

Q: I’ve already used an Amazon Diaper Coupon Code and I want to use more. Can I?
A: Yes! After your first order of diapers has shipped cancel your subscribe & save subscriptionand you will be able to make a new order using new coupons!

Q: Where do I find a list of Amazon Diaper Deals?
A: You can check out my list of the best Amazon Diaper Deals or check out the Amazon Subscribe & Save Page in Diaper Care.

Whew! Ok, I think that just about covers it, but if you have any other questions or if you want to share a diaper deal you found with the rest of us leave me a comment on my Coupon Gal Facebook Page, or email me! I love it when you guys share the savings!

My Frugal Vacation!!

September 7, 2010

(Jaycie & Me)

A little over a week ago I met my dear friend Jaycie (from Coupon Geek) in Las Vegas, Nevada. We live so far apart and usually only get this opportunity at blogger conferences (if we are lucky). So, we decided we could plan a little FRUGALICIOUS vacation using all the online resources and coupons possible! Let me tell you….we definitely succeeded!! Your probably thinking, you what? In Vegas? Haha…well, we figured Vegas hotels would be cheap during the hot Summer months and it was! So, let me tell you how we did this little frugal mini-vacation and all that we were able to do in just two days!!

First, Jaycie saved up her Swag Bucks to purchase Southwest Gift Cards and flew to Vegas for FREE! Yes, I said FREE!! It is possible! Swag Bucks is an awesome search engine program that allows you to earn points just for searching the internet the way you already do and then redeeming the points for prizes or gift cards. My plane ticket was a gift from my parents for my birthday.

Southwest offered Jaycie a discount code for the Monte Carlo Hotel in Las Vegas when she booked her flight, so we got our hotel super cheap. One of the nights was only $59!! There are lots of online discount hotel sites like that offer very competitive rates and the further ahead you plan, the more you will save!

While we were there we ate at restaurants that we got certificates for through Groupon! Groupon is a wonderful online program that offers 50-90% off various online stores, restaurants, spas, entertainment, etc. Every day they have a different offer in almost every major city, so if you plan ahead, check Groupon daily and purchase certificates ahead of time for places near your vacation site (or even at home for a date night) you can save a ton on entertainment and dining out!

We paid $25 for a $55 dining certificate for the upscale Kotan Asian restaurant in the Treasure Island Hotel. I have to tell you….it was AMAZING food and it was fun getting dressed up too! The outfit I am wearing cost $15 (from Forever 21) and Jaycie’s dress was $25 (from Target)! When it comes to clothes,  you are in the right place for deals because I LOVE fashion!! In fact a lot of my friends call me a frugal fashionista. I think that is funny! Well, who said just because I am wise with my money means that I can’t still have a sense of fashion? Right? Well, you will find clothing salespromo codes, and printable coupons for department and retail stores on a weekly basis here on Coupon Gal.

…………..(This is me)                                                        (This is Jaycie)

The food was not only delicious, but it was actually beautiful!! Check out our california sushi rolls and mochi desert!

For entertainment, we are simple gals (and frugal too), so you can bet we took advantage of the FREE stuff! We enjoyed our hotel pool, street performers, and even watched the water show in front of the Bellagio hotel. That water show is wonderful by the way….if you ever go there, you should take a little time to go see it.

I know you are probablly going to laugh, but we even went to the movies!! Haha…I know, movies in Vegas? Well, we both have little ones at home and it isn’t always easy to get out to see a movie, so we used our $4.00 Fandango Movie Ticket we purchased through Groupon to see the movie Eat, Pray, Love! It was a great movie by the way and I am reading the book now!

If you have been reading my blog for any time now, you know I LOVE to take pleasure in the sweet things in life! You know…. warm Summer nights, dancing when no one is looking, and of course DESERT!! I actually (just ONCE) want to go to a restaurant and order desert before my meal! Why not? Wouldn’t that be fun? Well, thanks to Groupon once again, Jaycie and I each got a dozen of Gigi’s Cupcakes for just $18!

I have to tell you, the best part about getting these cupcakes was giving them out to random people in Vegas! We gave one to a vendor in the middle of the Caesars Palace mall, gave some to two different couples eating next to us at the Cheesecake Factory, four different workers in Tiffany’s & Co., and even to a girl in the women’s restroom! Haha….seriosly, I did give her one in there! It felt wonderful to share our deals we got with other people, even if it was in the bathroom!

So, while I love taking the time to write and tell you a little about my life, my main point is thatplanning ahead is the best way to save money!! I know I say that all the time, but I say it because I really do believe it! I practice what I preach here on Coupon Gal. I have a Swag Bucks accounta Groupon account, I use, and I definitely PLAN AHEAD! Thanks to these wonderful programs, I am able to save, enrich my life, and enjoy frugal vacations and you can too!! So, cheers to your next frugal vacation!

*We were only there for two days and used three different Groupons!

I wanted to share with you a little couponing secret that I use all the time and maybe some of you hadn’t thought of. I always look at all the grocery ads and clip all the MANUFACTURER coupons I find from each one. Then I look at all the ads and see if I can get a good deal using them at another store!

For example, this week the Cardenas ad had a $4.00 MC off 4 12-packs of coke. At Albertsons this week they have coke on sale for $1.99 ea. if you buy 4, so this is what I did:

Buy 4 Coke (12-Packs): $1.99 ea.
Use $4.00 Cardena’s In-Ad Coke Coupon (this was a MANUFACTURER Coupon)
Final Price: $.99 ea.

Hot deal huh? So my point is to show you (if you didn’t already know) how to pull off these little behind the scene saving tricks. It’s a great way to maximize your dollar without having to go searching very far for coupons!

That’s my little tip for today! Hope you are having a great weekend!

I just LOVE my readers! You guys always support me and brighten my days so much. About a week ago I mentioned that I love the word “FRUGALICIOUS” that I made up and that I would like to have a song made using it. Guess what? One of my readers made one! I think it is so cute and fun. Now we just need it put to music and sung :)

So here it goes, courtesy of Christy Delauder
to the tune of Fergie’s “Fergalicious” song….

Four, tres, two, uno
