3 Simple Ways to Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half
and STILL Eat Healthy!
I absolutely and utterly despise when people say, “I can’t afford to eat healthy.” (Wow…that wasn’t a very nice way of starting this article. Sorry about that. But seriously!) You can! Absolutely…you can!! Really, it’s just about retraining your mind to shop smarter. We all know the price of gas isn’t the only thing that’s been raising in recent months. Putting dinner on the table costs more too, but if you teach yourself to think differently about the way you shop, you can kinda beat the system!
The global Food Price Index compiled by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization shows us that shoppers are paying more for everything, so unless your wages keep increasing, or you just pain hit the Lotto, you will have to figure something out. I want to show how to cut your grocery bill costs and still eat healthy. It is so important to eat healthy. You know that, I know that, so let’s do this!
Start with these three simple steps:
1. Plan Your Meals Around What is on Sale: ALWAYS plan your meals around what is on sale this week! Buy the fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains that are on sale and then use those to make your menu for the week. If this week chicken breasts, ground turkey or beef, and bananas are on sale, then go with those products and make a Healthy Chicken Tortilla Soup, a Healthy/Low Fat Chicken Enchilada Casserole, or Healthy Baked Tostadas, Healthy Petite Lasagna Cups and maybe even some Healthy Banana Bites for desert! Go through your circular for the week and make a list of what you will buy and even try to use printable grocery coupons to save even more on those sale items!

2. Replace Meat Products with Vegetables and Beans: One of the ways I cut back on my grocery costs is by replacing expensive meat products with vegetables or beans like I did in my Healthy, Low Cost Spaghetti Recipe. Let’s be honest, vegetables and beans are about 1/3 the cost of meat (comparing both on sale). So, yep…you bet I use a LOT of vegetables and beans in my meals.
If you are saying…”My kids won’t eat them!” Well guess what?! They will if they learn to like them. You may have to try 1, 2…..maybe even 5 times, BUT eventually they will develop the taste buds for these healthy foods and you will be teaching them at a young age what healthy foods taste like. I’m not a doctor (I’m just a mom with real life experience) and I can tell you that my kids would probably have told you at one point they hate vegetables and beans…but now?! NOPE…they love them!

3. Buy Frozen or Freeze Fresh Food: According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Americans throw away 15 to 25 percent of their food, with fresh produce accounting for 35 to 40 percent of that. What is this waste costing you??? About $1,350 to $2,200 per year for an average family. If you pick up a great deal on fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, etc. and you stumble on the realization that you are not going to use it before it expires…FREEZE IT! Don’t waste it! Don’t throw it away! You can make lots of food with frozen products like I did in my Healthy Fruit Salad Dessert Recipe and Healthy Petite Lasagna Cups Recipe.
If what I already told you hasn’t convinced you to waste less, just think about this; “If we wasted just 5 percent less food, it would be enough to feed 4 million Americans; 20 percent less waste would feed 25 million people.”
